Surely you have noticed some white spots appearing in your candles made with soy wax. Well, it's normal and very common. Frosting is a natural phenomenon that can occur on soy candles. It is a crystalline pattern, due to polymorphism, that appears on the surface of the candle and can give the candle a whitish, frosty or cloudy appearance. It is cosmetic and won’t impact how well the candle performs.
The appearance of frost or glaze is produced when the soy wax molecules realign and form crystals on the surface of the candle. This is a natural process that occurs when the soy wax is exposed to changes in temperature or when the wax is still curing. Even us in Sweet as Home can't escape it sometimes.
While frosting does not affect the performance or scent of the candle, as it is more of a cosmetic issue, it can be a concern for some customers who prefer a smooth, even surface on their candles. However, it is important to note that frosting is a natural characteristic of soy wax and does not indicate a defect in the candle. Remember all the advantages that soy wax brings so do not be discouraged by this natural defect.
Minimize frosting on soy candles
However, if you'd like, we can share some ways to minimize frosting on soy candles. We are going to rule out using additives, since it does not guarantee a radical change and also that we do not want to add to the list of ingredients. Remember we want to be sustainable with few ingredients.
We also ruled out using other types of waxes, since we are currently in love with the advantages of soy wax. We embrace the natural beauty of frosting and will not to let it heavily influence the design of our candles.
If you have a heat gun you can use it. This can help smooth out any frosting but can't guarantee that will not cause frosting again due to the change of temperature. However, this technique requires caution to avoid overheating the candle or causing other damage. So please be careful.
Embrace the frosting!
Frosting can add a unique texture and visual interest to the candle. It is like the rings of the passage of time in wood, a natural beauty. Just enjoy the fragrance and the sensation of the candles and relax :)
